Policies and Terms
At The Engine Room, the goal is simple: diagnose the problem, explain what needs to be done, and make sure you know what you're paying for before non-routine work begins.
Diagnostic Fee
A $50 diagnostic fee applies when The Engine Room is asked to diagnose a problem.
The diagnostic fee covers inspection, testing, troubleshooting, findings, and a repair recommendation.
If you approve the recommended repair, the $50 diagnostic fee is applied toward the repair cost.
If you choose not to proceed with the repair, the diagnostic fee remains due.
Additional diagnostic time or specialized testing may be recommended when a problem requires more extensive troubleshooting. Any additional diagnostic work will be discussed before it is performed.
Repair Authorization
The Engine Room does not perform non-routine repairs or purchase non-routine parts without customer approval.
After diagnosis, you will be told:
What was found
What needs to be repaired
What parts are needed
Estimated labor
Estimated total cost
Approval may be provided by text, email, written authorization, or another method agreed upon with the customer.
If additional problems are discovered during a repair, work will stop and you will be contacted before additional non-routine work is performed.
Labor & Parts
Repair labor is $60 per hour, billed in 30-minute increments.
Parts and materials are additional unless specifically included in a service or package price.
Some repairs may require special-order, non-returnable, or unusually expensive parts. A parts deposit may be required before those parts are ordered.
Estimates
Estimates are based on the information available at the time the equipment is inspected.
An estimate may change if additional problems are discovered after disassembly or during testing. The Engine Room will contact you before proceeding with additional non-routine work.
Customer-Supplied Parts
Customer-supplied parts may be accepted at The Engine Room's discretion.
The customer is responsible for providing the correct part. The Engine Room does not guarantee the fit, quality, compatibility, or performance of customer-supplied parts.
Labor associated with installing a customer-supplied part is still billable.
If a supplied part is incorrect, defective, damaged, or otherwise unsuitable, additional labor may be required. The Engine Room may require parts to be sourced through the shop when necessary to complete a repair properly.
Repair vs. Replace
Not every piece of equipment is economical to repair.
If the estimated cost, condition, age, parts availability, or overall condition of the equipment makes repair impractical, The Engine Room will tell you.
Sometimes the best repair recommendation is not to repair it.
Equipment Pickup & Return
Customer drop-off and pickup are available by appointment.
Pickup and return service is available within 10 miles for an additional fee. See the Pickup & Return page for current rates.
Customers are responsible for ensuring equipment is accessible and safe to collect when a pickup is scheduled.
Equipment Pickup After Service
Customers will be notified when equipment is ready for pickup or return.
Equipment should be collected within 7 days of notification unless another arrangement has been made.
If equipment remains at The Engine Room after that period, we will attempt to contact the customer and make arrangements for pickup.
Equipment that remains unclaimed may be subject to applicable storage charges and other remedies permitted by South Carolina law. Any such action will follow the notice and legal procedures required by law.
Payment
Payment is due when equipment is picked up or returned.
The Engine Room accepts:
Credit and debit cards
Cash
Other electronic payment methods offered by The Engine Room
Checks are not accepted
South Carolina Sales Tax
Customers age 85 or older may qualify for a 1% reduction in state sales tax on eligible purchases for their personal use. The customer must request the reduction and provide proof of age. Applicable local taxes and other tax rules still apply.
Equipment will not be released until the balance due has been paid in full.
Warranty
The Engine Room stands behind its workmanship.
Repairs performed by The Engine Room are covered by a 30-day workmanship warranty for the same repair-related issue when the failure is determined to be related to the original workmanship.
The workmanship warranty does not cover:
Normal wear and tear
Unrelated failures
Misuse or abuse
Neglect
Improper operation or storage
Customer-supplied parts
Failures of other components
Modifications made after service
Consumable items
Routine maintenance
Damage caused after the equipment leaves The Engine Room
Parts supplied by The Engine Room are subject to the applicable manufacturer's or supplier's warranty.
A warranty claim does not automatically cover unrelated repairs, additional parts, or diagnostic work required to determine the cause of a new or unrelated problem.
Equipment Condition & Acceptance
The Engine Room reserves the right to decline equipment that cannot be safely serviced, is excessively damaged, presents a hazardous condition, or cannot reasonably be diagnosed or repaired with the available equipment, information, parts, or tooling.
Unusual gasoline-powered equipment may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Equipment containing excessive fuel leakage, hazardous materials, significant contamination, or other unsafe conditions may be refused until the condition is corrected.
Cleaning
Standard cleaning is included with service at no additional charge.
Equipment may be cleaned using appropriate methods such as compressed air, brushing, wiping, or pressure washing when appropriate.
The Engine Room does not provide deep-cleaning or detailing services.
The goal is simple:
It leaves The Engine Room cleaner than it came in.
Customer Responsibility
Customers are responsible for providing accurate contact information and telling The Engine Room about known problems, recent repairs, modifications, unusual operating conditions, and anything else that may help diagnose the equipment.
Customers should remove personal property and other items from equipment before leaving it for service.
The Engine Room is not responsible for personal property left with equipment.
Repair Recommendations
The Engine Room's recommendations are based on the condition of the equipment, the observed problem, available parts and service information, expected repair cost, and practical considerations.
Customers make the final decision about whether to authorize repairs.
The Engine Room's job is to provide an honest assessment so you can make that decision with the information you need.
I want to fix your gear, not generate a parts bill!
